Man confesses to sex offences targeting boys at youth camp

Courtroom illustration Legal proceedings
The accused admitted 17 criminal counts at the judicial center on the end of the week

A person who spiked treats with sleeping medication and provided them to youngsters at a summer program in the area has confessed to sexual crimes against two children aged nine and ten years old.

The defendant was detained after eight minors and an older person became sick at Stathern Lodge in the summer month.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he stood at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he denied a single sexual charge he was facing, which was involving a young boy.

Ruben was remanded in custody prior to a additional proceeding on 28 November.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, detailed Ruben's offending to the judicial body.

She said his those affected were under-privileged children who were attending a youth camp which he ran.

The man played a "candy game" with the minors, the prosecutor said, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She told the court the defendant had engaged in this activity with the young males "for many years", and minors had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She explained the man had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the youngsters being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had suspicions in summer 2025.

Mrs Prior KC added: "In the summer" his family member had worries about the activities, for good reason.

"They chose" to have a look in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC said items including baby oil, Vaseline and syringes were found, and his stepson notified the law enforcement about his concerns.

She explained Ruben continued to conduct the "treat game" with six boys that time - that Saturday - and they were all sick the following morning.

"Authorities" had not arrived by that stage," she stated further.

The oversight body, the police conduct office, earlier informed that it was reviewing the police response of the events.

Mrs Prior said the children were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson notified the authorities again.

She explained the man then engaged in the "treat game" in a space of five minors.
